Booting a Compaq laptop running ME

By smithjj ·
I cannot boot my Compaq laptop running Millenial Edition. I get the background screen, the intro chime, and the mouse works, but no toolbar or desktop icons. I run Task Manager and only one process is running: Appstat. I can boot into "Safe Mode", but I get the same results. I boot "Step by step" and I get the same. I leave off reading the Registry, and all window drivers, but I get the same results.
I can boot from a floppy to DOS and so I have copied some files off the laptop. I can recover the original installation, but I lose my files. I have large Voice recognition files for my handicapped daughter that I want save that don't fit on floppies. Any idea to allow me to boot or to move the files? Thanks.

First, boot into safe mode, do a registry edit and recover your product ID and product key. The location is here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion. Copy both numbers.

Find a buddy that has a ME installation disk. Compaq is a "Pain in the A%%." They only give you a recover disk that will wipe out all of your programs.

Reinstall ME, forcing it to use the C:\windows directory. While doing the install, it may ask several questions regarding drivers. Direct it to the c:\windows directory. You may need to drill down into the "System" or "INF" directories so that it will load the needed Compaq drivers.

This should let you recover you system enough so that your icons will reappear and may actually get it up and running so that you can use the laptop with no further changes.

Paul.

Sorry. Good idea, but I didn't have an ME install disk. Your right about Compaq. Ultimately, I did re-install ME, using the suggestion #4.

you can use a compression program that works in dos to move the file to floppies.
arj.exe, lha.exe and pkzip.exe (and pkunzip) comes to mind.
Unless the recovery cd does a format of the whole c drive you can also move the files that you need to a separate (new) folder and (re) install winme again.

When in taskmanager you can make a new task and run explorer, if it works and you have winzip , you can use winzip to move the files to floppies.

You may not need to find a Windows ME CD. Look in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS. If you see a large number of .CAB files, those should be the Windows ME installation files you need. If installing Windows ME over an old copy, you shouldn't lose anything. Boot to DOS. CD to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS. Execute the SETUP.EXE file.

You might also run the registry checker. From Windows run the command SCANREGW /OPT /FIX. This may help your problem.

Good luck!

Great help! I ran this from my Windows 98 boot disk and re-installed Win ME. I got into a panic because I could find the Win ME key. When we called Compaq to get it, we turned the laptop over to get the serial number and there on the bottom was--the ME software key!!!

Windows ME have System Restore program built in to restore the previous known good configuration and you can find it in the Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. YOu have to boor into Safe Mode first to be able to use this utility. The System Restore will privide you a list of the last setting that was still good and select the date before the things happens and click Restore to let the utility restore back your original settings.
