booting problem

hi every one
in my system i have win xp,from a couple of days when i am trying to boot the system it is not booting properly and it stops in between and a red light appears on the moniter which indicates the system has stopped booting os. then i tried to format the disc and install 2000. when i did that couple of times it did properly but later on it is the same case
can any one help me in fixing the probelm please

it is hardware. or it is software.
eliminate software possiblilty by creating a boot disk, say a windows 98 boot disk. boot system with that disk and see if you can make problem happen. bake system etc. if no problem, you have eliminated all but hard disk related stuff. since you are able to get it working for a while, that doesn't seem likely culprit to me. i would look for virus.

yesterday when i started the system there was no problem.every thing was normal.but after couple of shutdowns and restarts then again the problem of monitor turnoff evolved. so do u think will there be any problem with hardware parts like motherboard or VGA.

sgt shultz gave some good points. I would also look at the power supply. I suspect that it is too small to power all of your installed hardware or is in a state of failure. Try a known good power supply with enough watts ( 300+ )for your system. Should this resolve your problem, replace the power supply.
