bootup error – ntldr not found

I installed XP Pro and now every time I reboot the machine it complains it can’t find ntldr. It is on the c:\ where it should be. If I put in the cd and let the machine reboot it will boot up just fine. I then take out the cd until next time I have to reboot. Any idea why it doesn’t like the ntldr file on the c: drive? (I even copied the ntldr file from the cd to the c: drive and that didn’t solve the problem.)

Is your boot cd for XP with SP1? If so, I had this same problem. I created a partition using fdisk, format, etc. Then when I installed with the XP/SP1 cd, ntldr was missing. The way that I resolved was to delete the partiton and re-create it from the XP boot cd. When I use a boot cd without SP1, no problems at all. Hope this helps.

Boot off the CD, get into the setup program, select repair -> repair using recovery console (forgot the actual menu order but that’s the idea).

When you’re in recovery console (something like DOS prompt, you need Administrator’s password to access it), use the FIXBOOT command and see if that does it.
