Bootup stops on F1 to enter setup screen

By ScarlettAL ·
I have a computer that stops on the "Hit F1 to enter setup" black screen every single time the computer is booted up. Any ideas why?

well, did you try hitting f1? (rdl) if no joy, maybe you need keyboard replaced. if keyboard works, and you can get into setup, just go into it and then pick save settings and exit and see if that helps. if not, tell us more. if the computer is more than few years old, maybe you need new bios backup battery...

Does the machine offer you the option of continuing? I can think of two things that can cause this: 1. The battery on your motherboard needs to be replaced 2. Something is set incorrectly in BIOS

is your PC a compaq. on compaqs the BIOS is on a partition on the hard drive, so it may not be there or could be corrupted. just a thought, but it might work. i think dells are like that as well

It's also possible that if you replaced the hard drive recently with one that is of an unfamiliar topology (Cylinders, Heads, Etc.) that the BIOS cannot figure out exactly what's going on and it halts. Once you F1 to continue the drive boots because it guesses as well as it can--and thus the drive is still bootable. You might need to try a DDO on the drive if this is the case, or better still get a newer BIOS for that computer.
