BOSE - the REAL story

By Oz_Media ·
Just a tad off topic on this one, but it is something I read about, hear about and see online all the time, BOSE, the marketing gurus and their amazing sounding speakers.

I for one have often said that BOSE is all about marketing and that for the price, you can find speakers that dance circles around the BOSE line of misrepresented speakers. I have also had that opinion contested more than once by people saying how wonderful BOSE sounds.

For the average ear, they SOUND 'okay' but they do not sound amazing (as their price or marketing would suggest)one fact in the linked article (which if you are interested in audio at all, is VERY informative indeed and well worth the read.) is that BOSE spent more on marketing last year than ALL of the high end speaker companies combined.

That's Paradigm, JBL, Mordaunt Short, CerwinVega, Acoustic Research/RBH, and literally DOZENS more, combined.

And the frequency response is simply laughable. While all high end manufacturer's display their frequency response levels based on a 3dB loss or gain, BOSE shows ridiculous levels based on a 10dB loss or gain (in case you are not sure of what that means, in order ot get the correct frequency as noted, the speaker is so far off axis it will be distrorted and playing at a different volume than the rest of the music, making such specifications absolutely and completely useless.

As for BOSE, I never did think their speakers were that good anyway (I can't tell several of my friends that though, regardless of how much proof I show them).

Experience

by Oz_Media In reply to Sad...

I've been around a while, I know all about the 'Hey this is not a technical post" BS by people who can't navigate a website, but are trusted to run a company's sever.

as for your friends, it is subjective. if you have a discerning ear, you already know about teh BOSE lies, if you do not, they sound fantastic and chances are you bought on hype and what other friends said, not what engineers and audiophiles say.

I've told many people about BOSE before (been in audio for a few decades now)and they just say, "well to YOU they sound crappy but to the average ear they sound great!" What they don't realize is that the $299.00 speaker in a box system would sound just as GREAT to them too, but they never get to THAT part of the store. (Read the part of the article on Bose store setups and positioning far away from other speakers. I know this one myself, first hand.)

To each his own; I work with speakers in excess of $30K pair, but I don't expect everyone to hear the difference between them and a $1000.00 pair, it took me years ot understand what is sound and what is colour, it jumps out at me now.

To most, the $1000.00 speakers sound great, thus referring back to Bose, what a waste of money the $1300.00 BOSE system is.

Likely what they are buying is

by The Scummy One In reply to Experience

just perceived glamour of their friends. They think that their friends/others know better and are just following hype/store displays, and salespeople. Often they dont trust their own senses in case these other people are more right :0

Did I mention a few months back I was listening to an mp3, and asked what I was doing. In the conversation this lady told me that she got an ipod and wore it at party's, but didnt know what it was. She spent about $400 on it because it was trendy :0

And people wonder why marketing works so well. People want to be parted from their money, and then b!tch about it when it happens...

I have an older pair...

by tcavadias Staff In reply to Experience

.. that I bought back in 1993 - two small cubes and a subwoofer - course I got a heck of a deal on them (when they placed them onsale in the store they misquoted the price - they were suppose to be 495.00 dollars and got marked and advertised as 49.50) - I actually love them speakers to death - but I wouldn't pay what they want now as I just don't think they sound as good as my old set (still going strong after all these years) - and heck who can complain about 49.50 speakers

No doubt

by Oz_Media In reply to I have an older pair...

I am sue there isn't an audiophile or scrutinous reviewer on the planet that didn't agree they were worth fifty bucks!

Well done, I love those mistakes too...unless I'm the one who makes them (thus my need for editors, with my typing issues and all)!

It's nice to get...

a bargain once in a while... I will say though considering how long they have lasted so far - it was money well spent.

No Highs, No Lows, must be BOSE

by magic8ball In reply to BOSE - the REAL story

Is what I've always heard from audiophiles with more experience/use than myself. I have always been a Vega kind of guy for home speakers and I like Pioneers offerings for my vehicles.

Ahh the Japanese sound

by Oz_Media In reply to No Highs, No Lows, must b ...

YUO like teh Japanese sound then, which is just fine and saves you a lot of money too.

It's popular due to pop rock music, which accebtuates treble and sub bass frequencies.

European speakers will be focused more to the upper midrange witha reserved tweeter. This is why they are often called "old people's" speakers or 'Classical Music/Jazz" speakers.

Now that I am spoled, and yet still unable to afford my preferences, I am very focused on accuracy, detail, imaging etc. In which case you need a perfect balance between driver materials, crossover feequency, cabinet bracing, crossover capcitor type etc.

Yeah, 'Music snob". I won't aplogize for it, because a discerning ear in my field is a good thing, but also an expensive thing I've found

Alot of it is in the adjustments

by magic8ball In reply to Ahh the Japanese sound

Mainly I listen to my mp3 discs (rock and metal) but I still like to hear lyrics as well. I have my eq adjusted to be able to hear lyrics with good low, mid and highs. The amp has a pretty good range on the crossover. I don't turn it loud very often but I like to be able to hear what I am listening to in the land of the lowriders with the bass turned all the way up. Those lowriders sound horrible. I like a good sound which is probably why I spent two weeks fiddling with the eq and x-over, but its not necessary for my job like yours. Just a preference. I know a couple of 'music snobs' and it's not a bad thing. You should hear Vivaldi or Beethoven in my truck. You just might be impressed for what it is.
