Brain Studies... the difficulty of hearing women

Men do have trouble hearing women, scientists find

LONDON (AFP) - Men who are accused of never listening by women now have an excuse -- women's voices are more difficult for men to listen to than other men's, a report said.

The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine

NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds.

Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said.

The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, "The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural 'melody' in their voices.

"This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice."

The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice.

So now you guys have the perfect excuse... "Sorry, honey, your voice is so melodious, I just couldn't hear what you were saying."

Your voice is so melodious

That I just thought it was a new Mtv girl group. Or it was like hearing things that I just block out, like the alarm and the babie crying. Well if some one yells too much I just do not hear them.

Yeah?

But now you'll find a report that women cannot read printed material because it is too simple and they can only read hand-written material because not only are our vocal chords more complex, but our brains are as well.

Easy answer

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to Yeah?

Cut & Paste into a WP and change the font to what looks like running writing.

Wouldn't work with me as "She Who Must Be Obeyed" already insists that my handwriting is unreadable so it all has to be printed off for her to read.

But from my admittedly limited experience women are unable to hear me when I ask something about where I'm to put a new computer or something else like that. She insists that she has never heard me but I already know that she only hears what she wants to hear and ignores everything else.

I'm still in "mourning" from my divorce. I haven't asked a girl out in years. This time around I am gonna sit back and let the ladies flock to me. Oh I wish life was that good...
