browser based client or VB Client

By SiobhanK ·
I need to decide whether to develop the client side of my application in VB or make it browser based say JSP. WIll a VB client provide a much richer experience for the end user than a Browser based Client (JSP)? Will the VB client will be faster ifthere is a lot of presentation logic as the end user will need to work with this application all day everyday?

browser based client or VB Client

User experience and performance:
usually a (small) plus for a fat client.
However depends a lot on what you want,
quite a lot can be done in HTML (fed by JSP or ASP) these days.

Cost of managing the clients: usually a BIG plus for the browser based app.
That's why fat clients are 'out' and browserbased is 'in' these days...

Hope thiz helpz,

Personally, all the development I'm doing is based on a browser client and I haven't found any situations in which I could have provided a richer experience using VB except the one mentioned below.

Whether a VB client will be faster in a particular application is really a function of the server hardware, desktop hardware and network connectivity. If there will be situations in which the desktop is overpowered relative to the server and network bandwidth will be constrained, then the VB client might make more sense.

I work with one client where that is exactly the case. Servers are early Pentium models (e.g. P66) with 64meg of RAM, some sites are served by 56k frame relay and yet the desktops are PIII/600 with 128meg of RAM.

So it really depends on what you have to work with on the hardware and network side.
