Browser hijacked

By jwagner45 ·
I'm running Windows XP and recently my browser got hijacked. It keeps making my home page "about:blank" no matter how many times I change it. My ISP is SBC/Yahoo DSL, everytime I log in and try to get to my email it takes me to some sort of search page(I think it's Cool Search) but in the address bar it says "about:blank". I've run Norton anti-virus and several spyware programs but no matter what they find they don't fix my problem.

Any one have any ideas?

There are two programs that will help. Spybot Search & Destroy and CWShredder. When running Spybot make sure you update definitions before scanning your computer. You can find CWShredder at Also, you can check your machine and get removal information at

Hope this helps.

CWShredder removes a few certain browser hijacks and this one fits the bill.

You should also install IESPYAD, it adds blocked certficates to your IE certificates list so that these known offenders cannot take over.

Turn off system restore if it is used in your os.

Download, update, and run the following.

Your Antivirus Software

Look for the file in English CWShredder.exe

Hijack This:

Hijack This is useful in that it shows what is currently loading on startup. You must know what is good and what is bad. Once you check it and fix it is gone. So be sure.

Run Your Antivirus again

I have had to boot into safe mode and run these.

Good Luck Lee

Another helpful tool is Spware Blaster. It is a freeware program that blocks known spyware processes from running on your machine. It runs silently. Also, the creators of this software update the spyware definitions from time to time to help with new processes being created.
