Browser won't download files anymore

By pcmaster ·
All was working fine until today and I realized I cannot download any type of file from any website. I can't download .EXE or .ZIP files.

I've tried the two methods I know of. Click on the link and it comes to a page that says it can't find the file.

The other method is to right-click on the link and hit 'Save Target As..' . This method gives the following error:

"Internet Explorer cannot download {filename} from {website}
The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response"

I've tried at several different sites including those that I know the file exists and is functioning and I continue to get the same error.

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro and IE 6xx.

I've checked for viruses or anything weird in the task manager, but nothing seems irregular.

Thanks.

I would suggest you to do few things:

1. Try checking your C: drive for free space. If it reports less space or wrong information according to you then do a scan disk and fix for errors. This is certainly a cause, if there.

2. If the above case is not valid, then I would suggest you to repair the IE either through Add/ Remove programs or simply by running the IE setup again.

3. If the problem still persists, then you should check for any firewall setting you might have on your computer which is preventing you to download files.

Hopefully, the first/second option will resolve your problem.

i don't know those exact symptoms.
did you try *un*blocking popups. do you have any yellow bar IE security warnings across the top of the page? right-click it if you have one...
have you installed a spyware blocker recently? and/or do you have one or more pop up blockers installed? also reset your Internet Explorer security options to the defaults.

I'd never had thought of that. My Google Bar was corrupt and the Popup Blocker wasn't functioning. That seemed to be the only symptom of a problem with the bar. Now I can just uninstall that and reinstall a new updated(I hope) version.

Thank you!
