Browsing Service problem???

by faisalmasood . Updated 24 years, 8 months ago

We have W2k as PDC (only DC in our domain)running DHCP, WINS, DNS, IIS. Two PCs running w2k as member servers for internet etc. & NT 4 Server & workstation, & Win 98 clients.

For a few days I’m having problems with Browsing service. Actually W2k PDC acts as Master browser in a domain. But its was loosing its status as master browser to other two W2k member servers. I assigned DHCP static ip to one of them which was manually set on it. It worked.

But the other pc was still creating problems. the errors are logged in Event Viewer. I used the utility BROWSELIST from http://ntsecurity.nu/ to check the browsing status. Its says my PDC & other w2k PC as master browsers. When problem occurs pcs don’t access some pcs.

So I stoped the Browsing Service of that w2k pc. Now it worked. But other workstations acts as master or backup browsers. So I sopped the browsing service of those pcs. It worked again. But now win98 pcs are creating same problem.

So tell me:
1) Why my W2K PDC isloosing master browser role.
2) Is it good to stop browsing services on clients, even though it doesn’t create further problem.
3) How to stop Win98 Pc from acting as master browser.

(I’ve read KB artilces regarding browsing service.)
