    BSOD during XP Pro setup

    Locked

    by pc&web ·

I have a reliable, until now, desktop. The chipset fan went out and it took me a little bit until I opened the case and found this. It had random BSODs which I dutifully recorded, usually. I wonder if something went wrong with the motherboard/chipset because of this.

I have basics installed for setup and to eliminate things. 1 hard drive, 2 optical drives, dual-video agp card, ethernet card, ps2 mouse, usb keyboard, 1 monitor

I replaced the chipset fan. I couldn’t get the previously-working XP installation to boot. It would have BSOD in normal and safe mode; not the same.

So, I put in the Win XP Pro installation CD and boot to identify the Windows installation. Before I press Esc to do a delete partition this BSOD appears. It has happened 3 times.

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop error
    STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X00000014, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0XF732F960)
    USBPORT SYS ? Address F732F960 F7327000 ? DateStamp

Any ideas? I appreciate the help.

Well you may not have to reinstall the OS here

The most likely reason that the BSOD appears is because of a Corrupt Registry that was caused by the CPU overheating and shutting down try using this utility first

This must have been a sales pitch response for software that needs Windows to run.

I cannot get into Windows AND I am getting a BSOD when running the XP install disk.

Thanks to anyone who has some ideas about this problem.

Well, the specific tool is free, but you are right

this won’t work while booting from CD.

Have you checked you BIOS settings are correct or reset them to factory default? I would suggest trying to boot and wipe the drive with http://www.dban.org/ so that there is nothing on the HDD to cause problems while setup is checking it.

Or you could slave the drive into another machine and do it if that fails.

You could also try disconnecting the HDD entirely and boot from a bootable CD of some sort to see if the problem persists. (Linux live CD, UBCD, etc.)

What were the BSODs from the installed OS?

          Tried a different keyboard?

          nVidia graphics card?

OK what is the Error Message on the BSOD

          by oh smeg ·

          In reply to won’t work

If it is a Missing File that changes with every attempt to install the OS you have a Timing Issue with the RAM or a faulty stick of RAM. You can use Mem Test 86 or the Ultimate Boot CD to check this but quite often mismatched RAM will Pass the tests and will work perfectly at all times except when you are installing Windows.

          Mem Test

          http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

          Ultimate Boot CD

          http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

If this is an issue with the RAM all you need do is remove all but 1 Stick of RAM load the system and when this is finished shut down unplug and refit the RAM.

If you have multiple RAM’s try plugging them out one at a time and retry.

Fixed one problem – new BSOD after rebuild

In reply to USB port cant read memory address???

Thanx 2BlueUK. After reading posts on other sites then reading your post – that was my clue as to what to do. I took out everything extra and got down to 1 RAM stick. I also went to a ps2 kybd and mouse. Rebuilt it with all except 2 sticks of RAM that I have to plug and test to keep 1. I verified with both sticks installed that random errors happen in Windows.

I confirmed the onboard USB is dead; turned it off in BIOS. Makes me curious wondering how memory and onboard USB controller went bad at the same time. Luckily I had a pci card for more USB ports already in it.

BUT now I had a BSOD during the process of reinstalling software and copying data between drives.
        STOP: 0x0000008E (xxx)
        Win32k.sys – Address …

I’m going to look this up now.
If someone has ideas… I sure do appreciate this site.

Windows XP Pro SP3 after doing all the updates from the SP1 install disc.

I had already found that KB article. I don’t recall if the error happened while doing what this article says – accessing menu item using keyboard.

Did you discover the bad hardware after you re-installed XP? If so, you may want to reinstall now that you have disabled or replaced the hardware.

Is this key in your registry?

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\pe386

          It shouldn’t be. Bad sign.

Please post the other info that comes with the Stop error. Look in the event logs and see if there is anything in there. Post warnings or failures.
