BSOD Error-"Unmountable_Boot_Drive"

By paj1130 ·
I received this error message and my PC seemed to be stuck in a perpetual booting cycle. I was not able to start in safe mode or any of the other choices, whenever i selected one, the pc would just reboot.....can you help with what may have caused this and how to work around it?

sounds like the hard disk controller driver, the drive, the controller, or the cable. you should have gotten a little more on the bsod. post it all?
you dont' mention what os. you could try booting from the xp install disk and attempting to re-run setup. if it can find your old os it'll offer to repair it, which might work. but if your drive is bad you will be needing a new one...

Swap your IDE cable, and check your controller card. Listen VERY
carefully for any noises though, it sounds like your drive is dead. If
the data's important enough, DriveSavers Data Recovery is a good
company at recovering data off of hard drives (they're not cheap
though).

I take it that you have tried the obvious and used the HDD Makers Testing Utility to test the HDD in this machine.

If it fails change the Data Cable and try again, if it still fails remove the drive and test it in a different computer if it passes then you know that it is the IDE Controller gone bad so you'll be looking at a new M'Board and if it still fails you know that the drive is in fact bad so you'll need to look at replacing the HDD.
