I am about to install Windows SBS 2003 on a new server to replace our old DC. I was planning to run it as a backup server for the first few weeks until I was happy that it was running ok. I was also planning to migrate Exchange and files to it, before retiring the old box, (badly needed.)
I was hopping for some pointers from people who have previously done this. My basic idea is something like this:
1. Set up new server as Backup DC.
2. Leave the server run for 4 – 5 days, while slowly adding the additional software, like backup S/W, etc.
3. AD replication should take care of AD migration. Is setting this up difficult?
4. If I set up Exchange in parallel, can I automate a replication at say midnight?
5. Finally, project file migration, (I was thinking running a restore from a backup.)
Is there anything that I am missing or should be aware of prior to starting this? Are there any potential tricky parts? One last thought ? we have a third party SSL certificate on our webmail web site, (IIS running on the server.) Can this certificate be migrated across or would a new cert be required?

SBS 2003, R1 SP1
DC, Email, Print and File Server.
Major Services: DNS, DHCP.
Applications running:
Exchange 2003
IIS ? exchange webmail.
Proposed New Server:
SBS 2003, R2 SP2
DC, Email, Print and File Server.
Major Services: DNS, DHCP.
Applications running:
Exchange 2003
IIS ? exchange webmail.
