I want to build my own computer using an AMD processor and an Asus motherboard do you any suggestions on what AMD processor is the best in and around 1.4gig and how to keep it cool?

Thunderbird at 1.4GHz, with at least a Thermaltake Chrome Orb. As a paranoid, I prefer the heavy duty cooling of a Dragon Orb, however. And don't forget to make sure the case is vented properly. This means at least one fan down low, in the "front" sucking air into the box and one fan up top in the "back" blowing air out. (It does no good to have a great fan on the CPU if you don't get the heat out of the box.)

Also, while you mention it, you also need to make sure that you don't dump excess heat onto your CPU from your power supply, hard drives, hi-performance video cards and so on. So plan the layout of your devices carefully, and add supplemental cooling if required.

Mikhailtech.com has more than you ever want to know about cooling stuff. Low end AMD XP processors are getting really cheap now.

Cyberguys.com has equipment for keeping your PC cooled. Check them out as well. Their prices are pretty reasonable.
