C: Drive Icon Launches App Install

By sarah.smith ·
Here's a goodie. None has figured it out yet.

My graphics user downloaded new drivers for her HP 4500 color printer. Somehow in the process the Autorun for the HP4500 install attached itself to the C: indicator. Now, when you double-click on the C: drive indicator, it starts the Autorun for the HP install.

I have removed everything related to the HP install with no result. I can only assume it's a setting held in the registry, but I can't see anything that points the way.

Anybody?Thx,

Without known exectly what the files are, this could be tough. I'm guessing he just extracted the stuff to the root of C instead of some suggested directory from setup.

I would see if I can run setup again into a different directory and just extract files and then match up what's there to what's in the root of C so you can either move or delete them. There's more then likely an autorun.inf or files similar to what we find on a CD-Rom, pertaining to the HP drivers.

Good luck to you

Mark

Sarah,
to me it sounds like somehow the user has copied the install CD to the root of C: and by default windows will run the autorun from there when the drive is opened. I would look for a file called "Autorun*.*" in the root of see and seewhat I get.

I was able to get the C: indicator detached from the Autorun function, but now it's attached itself to a setup function, and tells me I need to go to Control Panel to install new software... !!! Thanks for the feedback.. I'd appreciate more.

This is an NT workstation, by the way.
