Cable internet to Wireless?

By csikickbutt ·
Currently I have a cable internet hook-up but would like to route this into wireless. Can I do this from home or does it require permissions from my ISP?

Can I purchase a router to make my cable internet wireless?

Yeah, I have no knowledge of computers at all. I've got three kids that all seem to need to do homework at once.

Some cable companies tie the MAC address of the primary computer to the modem. If and only if that is the case you will need to spoof it through the router settings. Another gotcha is that often (esp. Cox in my area) the modem doesn't completely release the machine lease; resulting in a limited or no connection message and an IP beginning with 169.
Obtain the wireless router (with built in switch i.e. 4 ports too) unplug the modem's power and then coaxial cable. Power up the modem after about 30 secs. connect the coaxial cable and run the CAT 5 to the router's WAN port. Follow the Router's instrauctions to set it up and to add secrity to the wireless connection.
It is also good practice to change the default admin password for the router.
Have fun and tell the kids they owe you some extra choirs ;-)
