Cached accounts in Windows NT 4.0

By wdaniels2007 ·
My question is how do you fix an Nt 4.0 workstation that gets the message " A domain controller for your domain could not be contacted. You have been logged on using a cached account. The domain controllers are all NT 4.0 with the latest service packs and so are the workstations. Only one machine is having this problem.

Cached accounts in Windows NT 4.0

It could be alot of things, but if you know the nic good, the cable is good, and you have you protocols set up correctly, then what i find works sometimes is removing the computer from the domain, reboot, log onto the machine which is now part of a workgroup, then go back to Network properties
and add the computer back to the domain. Make sure you select the check box to create an account for this machine, and use the administrator account for username and password. You might also go into Server Manager and from the Fille menu select Add to Domain... and add the name of the machine having problems even if its listed in the list, the only thing it well do is say it is already a part of the domain, if it doesnt, then that could fix the problem. These are just a couple of things that usually get my machines back online when problems occur.

Go into the profiles in WINNT directory and make sure you have a Default User folder and an All Users folder. If not copy over the Administrator folder and rename and change appropriately the Administrator folder. Without these two folders you will receive this error message.
