Can anyone help me take better pics on my KODAK v570?

When I am indoors and take a pic with or without flash, the area lighting is captured worse than what I see. Way worse. But I see parents around me holding up their silly cell phone cameras or other cameras taking nicely lit pics without a flash.
I'm no photography buff so I don't have a clue what to change. I've scrolled down into the Menu and I see lots of things that I could set. Some are set on Auto, which is probably a good thing for folks like me.
Can anyone jump in and help me?
