Can browse but cannot find path

By bwalker ·
I have recently rebuilt an NT 4.0 Server which is a Domain Controller, unfortunately the OS was thrashed and was never documented by the vendor. I have reloaded and have it functioning once again as PDC, however I cannot access any shares even logged on as domain admin...I can browse the entire network, bur when I attempt to access a share I get an error message referring to "path not found". We use static addressing and have a flat network. I cannot even access an unprotected share...what am I missing?

Can browse but cannot find path

You don't mentioned if in your network exist a BDC. If not and if I understand correct your workstation are not authenticated by your PDC because you reistall it. Try with a workstation (logon local with admin rights) to remove from domain (set as member of workgroup). Reboot computer and after that set again as member of domain with options <create computer account in domain>.

If this is the situation you also have problems with users accounts.

NO BDC unfortunately...can browse and access shares fine from workstations...is from rebuilt PDC where I have no access. Viewing event log on server shows upon logon this AM accunts are being reestablished...these are production computers so all have some account information. I did something wrong in server setup...this server is also used as operator run production machine so I need to establish paths to network shares...cannot make path to open shares inside or outside of domain.

When you rebuilt the server, you changed the SID of the server and, therefore, of the domain. You would have to re-establish your trust relationships in both directions. If you haven't already done so, you need to remove the workstations from the domain and then rejoin the domain, so that the workstation accounts are registered in the "new" domain. Then, on workstations where you have network shares, you would have to re-enable the permissions for the domain admin and any other users or groups who need to access those shares - because your domain SID is changed, the workstations will no longer recognize the users and groups from the old domain, even if the names are exactly the same. Hope this helps!

Hi,
The points mentioned in Answer 1 is correct. When you reinstall a PDC or delete and re-create a machine/user account with the same name, all previous rights associated with that account is not retained. This is due to the SID being changed onre-creation of account. So you will have to reassign the permission to all your shares.
