Can dns server assume domain name from client query with no fqdn

I have a lot of clients which currently have not domain suffix set. They just have a hostname.
They are also not in active directory.
I’ll fix all this eventually, but for now i need them to resolve a hostname using dns. The dns server is not resolving the query, presumeably because it’s just getting a hostname with no domain.

I want to know can the dns server assume a domain name when receiving a query with no domain specified.
The clients are all windows xp, and the server is windows 2003. The dns server is authoritive for this domain, and it’s the only domain it manages.
