Can Ellison Scale the Wall ??

    by sa in phoenix ·

During a recent Data Warehouse Initiative dicussion, NCR raised an objection about Oracle’s inability to scale and support large databases (say 2Tb-10Tb) and support 500-2000 concurrent users. I think I understand the technical limitations of Oracle, and I acknowledge the considerable abilities of Teradata for VLDW projects. Heres my question :
Do you believe that Larry Ellison together with IBM, EMC, Sun, etc.. will be able to scale the wall with 8i.. Or will we want to wait for Oracle 9.0 or what other suggestions would people make ??

My guess is that we will probably have to wait for 9i to come out before that wall can be scaled. From all I know, Oracle is one of the most scalable DB’s out there, but you’re going to reach a limit on anything. You may be able to scale to a higher level with OPS (oracle parallel server).

      Hope this helps,

The fundamental difference between Oracle and Teradata is the Shared Nothing model that NCR has adopted on the SMP architecture. Oracle has not adopted “Shared Nothing” because it is primarily addressing OLTP and is relying on advances in MPP product architectures. The question was really intended to solicit input regarding the future scalability of oracle based upon 9i or future initiatives.

I wouldn’t be betting on 8i making the grade and whether you want to wait for 9 or go with Teradata now is a matter of horizon.

For the long term, I think it’s safe to assume that Oracle will succeed, at some point, with raising the bar. But if I had a window of opportunity that might be missed by waiting until that time, I wouldn’t wait.

I think I agree with you, but what features within 9i would be worth investigating? Have you encountered “The Wall” and if so when and what options have you considered to address it ?

I don’t really see anything even in v9 that addresses your concerns about VLDW. I would consider 9i for an e-commerce application or perhaps for an ASP project as those are both targets for the product.

I am not currently involved in any projectin which scalability is an issue on our existing Oracle platform so I haven’t followed your particular issue all that closely, but I haven’t seen any evidence that VLDW capabilities, per se, are being aggressively pursued by Oracle and that might stretch the timeframe even further.

Thank you. I am concerned by the answer, but I appreciate the response. What SHOULD Oracle be doing to address the VLDB marketplace ? Is ODS the long term answer ?
