Problem Backing up Just Programs

by TheChas In reply to can hard drive cloning so ...

The problem with backing up just the program folders is that most software either will not run, or will not run correctly if you only restore the program folder.

Unlike the days of DOS, where the program folder was the only folder required, most current programs add files to the Windows system folders and add lines (keys) to the Windows Registry. Some also add files to common and shared folders. Don't forget files added to My Documents under Application Settings.

Many programs will not even open without the Registry keys and support files.

So no, while you can configure some backup software programs to save specific folders, you cannot expect to restore an application by just restoring the Program folder.
