Can I control tape drive in ntbackup?

Using Windows 2000 server with a Seagate travan tape drive. I can’t get control of erase, retension etc of tape drive. Backups are sporadic to non existant. Drive message says the new tapes are the wrong format, but how do I format them with no control over tape drive.

Any insite would be fabulous.
