Can I have the same child domain name in two different forests?

By michael.spencer-chan ·
Hi guys,

I have two forests and I am transferring 5 domains under Forest A to Forest B. My company would really really like to keep the domain names that exist, as there may be some bespoke code and URLS in documents that correspond to the existing domain.

Basically, can I move DomainABC.ForestA.com to DomainABC.ForestB.com without any issues.

I know I CAN do it, I have created a test environment and used Quest tools to do this, I even created a DFS root pointing back across the forest that worked in co-existence. The new DomainABC.ForestB.com defaulted to a NetBIOS name of DomainAB0 as it conflicted with the original NetBIOS name of DomainABC. Apart from this, it seemed to work okay on a very basic level.

We have ordered a LOT of disk for our SAN to do some more thorough testing with all our DC's and apps before we do this for real, but I want to know if anybody knows if anybody has done this and if it worked or was a disaster?

DNS during co-existence is pretty much what I would like to discuss as the old domains will be decommisioned as soon as we are migrated.

Any help or advice is very much appreciated, especially from somebody who has tried doing this for real. Thanks guys.
