Can I install SATA w/IDE hardrives ?

By motokx37 ·
Hello All,
I am looking to add an additional HDD to my system, however all of my IDE connectors are full. I do have 2 open SATA connectors available on my mobo. Can I hook up a SATA HDD to one of these while still keeping and always booting from my IDE HDD? I have never used a SATA drive before. Do you just hook it up and then does XP just notice the SATA HDD as "Found new hardware" when it boots up. Thanks for the help!!!

Some systems it is quite that simple but most you need to make sure you have the correct SATA drivers for your motherboard for it to work. just like with additional IDE drives you want to make sure that your primary boot device doesnt change.

2 things to know.

1. Does your system support SATA(1)(1.5 up and down) or SATA II(3.0 up and down)
2. Are those ports enabled by default on your MB (some older boards come with them disabled)
