By churchdeacon ·
I want to reformat my hard drive and start from scratch, but I bought the update version of Windows XP Pro.. Can I re-install it on the harddrive once I format it?

Sure but it's not a re-install, it's a new install at that point.

But at that point I won't have a version ofwindows to update, so can I use my update version of XP to do a clean install?

Yes, you can perform a clean installation of the upgrade version of XP.

You do need to have the installation CD from a qualifying version of Windows.

Boot from the XP CD.

Start the installation.

You will be asked to insert your install CD for your older version of Windows.

Swap CDs.

Allow the installer to verify that the CD qualifies you for the upgrade version.

Swap back to the XP CD.

Thanks, but I should have mentioned that I have an HP laptop that came with a restore CD containing Windows ME that has been damaged beyond repair. So I don't have an older version of Windows to use anymore.

Yes it is easy but you'll need the old install CD to use as well.

What you do is remove the partitions on the HDD and even better use a wiping program to write 0's to every sector these are available from most of the HDD makers web sites.

Once you have a blank drive you insert the XP Upgrade CD and boot the computer at some point you will be asked for the Windows whatever CD so you open the drawer insert the Windows whatever Cd and close the drawer once the file has been recognized on this you will be prompted to replace the CD with the XP Update one and the install will proceed from there without any further problems.

Well there are only a few ways left open to you in that case the legal one would be to buy another set of Restore CD from the maker of the LT.

But if you have a friend with a copy of 98, 98SE, ME or 2000 you could either borrow that copy to install the Update to XP Pro or get a "Work" copy of the install CD burnt. If that latter was the case you would have to make sure that you did not have a product code of the the CD as that way you can not be accused of Pirating the Software only having a "Work" copy for your own use.
