Can I upgrade my Netbook to a larger & faster HDD??

By cyberghost_1 ·
Here's the issue... I have a Compaq Mini CQ10-120LA (CQ10-100 U.S. Model according to the BIOS) With an Intel Atom N270 @ 1.60GHz 1.60GHz, 2GB DDR2-800, 160GB 5400RPM SATA HDD running Win7 Ultimate... I want to upgrade my HDD to a 320GB 7200RPM SATA HDD... Now, I just finished a chat session with HP Online Tech Support and according to them my Netbook only supports 160GB 5400RPM HDD's... and that I can't upgrade to the 320GB 7200RPM HDD... also that my Netbook doesn't support 7200RPM HDD's... Is that actually true?? Am I stuck with my 160GB 5400RPM HDD?? Why is it that I can't upgrade according to them?? What might happen if I actually did try to upgrade my HDD?? I already purchased the 320GB 7200RPM HDD and I should get it in a few days... NOW... I also purchased an external SATA 2.5" USB 2.0 HDD enclosure just in case... so my other issue is I can theoretically install Win7 to the new HDD thru the USB case and boot from there... right??? PLEASE HELP ME ASAP!!!! Thanks in advance for any and all feedback!!!

Does not support does not mean it won't work

7200 RPM generates more heat and draws more power. 7200 rpm drives tend not to last as long, either. It will work, it will just hurt the battery life a bit and run a bit hotter. Faster RPM drives are a bit less tolerant of rough handling.

Most netbooks do not have fans, and the biggest casualty of too much heat is typically the hard drive. If you are sensible with the unit regarding keeping it cool, and don't treat it like a toddler, you will be fine.

You cannot run Windows from an external drive.

Also, external drive cases should be used only for short-term use, and not as an everyday drive. Most have no cooling fan so the drive runs wayyyy too hot, so the drive will live a short miserable life in an enclosure.

Thank for the input... I think my Netbook does have a small fan... I mean it has the cooling slots on one side that I regularly clean with compressed air. Also I have 2 cooling stations/bases with 2 fans each for extra cooling.. which have 2,000 RPM fans... I know it's a little excessive but I just wanted to make sure my Netbook stays cool... FYI... The new HDD I bought turns out is 500GB 7200.4 RPM Seagate Momentus SATA... which I have read up on and it seems to have excellent reviews... I rarely ever take my Netbook out of the house unless its work related and absolutely necessary... I constantly clean it wil compressed air and cleaning wipes... I mean it still even has the protective films that came with it right out of the box... I take very good care of my netbook... Now to the issue at hand... I do believe that I CAN upgrade to the 500GB 7200 RPM SATA HDD... I plan on a clean install and use the external USB case to transfer my files... I also have an external Hitachi SlimDrive 250GB HDD for backup purposes. So I should be ok I think... I'm just a bit nervous about removing the keybord to replace the HDD... I have been a PC Tech for 6 yrs... but only recently have started working with Laptops and Netbooks... I've never removed the keyboard from a Netbook and I would hate to ruin it or bend it out of form...Thanks again for the input... any further commects I will appreciate it... concerning this reply...or any comments for that matter...
