can I use 2 sata hard drives and then use 2 op.drive plugged into MB

Whew, Long question. I have 2 sata hard drives, no ide hard drives. Since I have 2 ide plugs on my MB can I plug each DVD into it’s own IDE plug? If so, would I set them both as masters? I’m a little afraid to try it.
