can i use an ide connector of a 3.5" hdd enclosure on an internal dvd write

By little_bad_boy ·
i need the cheapest dvd writer setup i can come up with for my laptop even if it is crude using the sources i have now. i have found a good deal for an internal LG dvd writer here. i also have a 3.5" hdd enclosure.

can i use the USB to IDE connector of my 3.5" hdd enclosure on any internal dvd writer drive so i can connect it to my laptop?

my reason why i opt for a crude setup instead of getting an external dvd writer is because i will use the internal dvd writer later on when i build up a desktop.

thanks in advance for your help!

Does the HDD caddy have external power?

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to can i use an ide connecto ...

You'll need an external power source for the enclosure, but the IDE connection should work the same as it does if the drive was connected internally.

Also, I'm not sure how you would jumper the drive (master/slave). But, I think it would go jumperless just like a HDD would be if it were in the enclosure. I may be wrong.

And, one last consideration. Will the drive physically fit into the enclosure? They usually fit into a 5 1/4" bay.

with this post. I would try setting the jumper to CS (cable select) though.... also add some duck tape too... No hack job is a true hack job with out the duck tape :).... "If you cant duck it, **** it!"

As Duct or Gaffer tape is a Must have item in any tool box

You have to use it as often as possible. Though personally I prefer the 200 MPH Tape that is used in F1.

It holds much better than normal Duct Tape and has a better range of colors.

Of course the down side is it doesn't come off as easily which is a bit of a nuisance when the time comes to remove things.

Personally in a case like this I would wrap the unit in Shrink Wrap Tape shrink it down to produce a liquid prof seal and then use Duct Tape to make it look pretty.

Ah Yes!!! The 200mph stuff is MUCH better!

That comes from a long time ago

by OH Smeg In reply to LOVE your logic.

When the Yamaha 250 & 350 Factory Racing Bikes came with Red Frames.

All of the Want to be's painted the frames of their RD Yamaha's red and made out that they had a Factory Racer where as we who actually did have the Factory Racing Bikes stripped them down to parts when they arrived painted the frames Black well Powder Coated them Black at least because it was cheaper than red and much more importantly it was done in 2 days as apposed to needing to wait for the Powder Coaters to have enough things to paint red to fill the oven to paint.

Even when the frames got badly bent the paint didn't flake off but just cracked. Now that was my idea of a great paint job.

But all the want to be racers used to tell us to paint the frames red so that people would think that we had factory racers. The fact that the guys ridding our bikes blitzed the field most times and won almost everything didn't matter because the frames where not red they had to be slower. So ever since that time we have always said that Red is Faster for that reason.

With the Racing bikes we needed a good finish but fast. It's just wasn't acceptable to leave a couple of frames for 6 months to get them back red. But if it was one of the Green Frame 750 SS Ducati's I may have though differently. But I don't think so.

Of course if it was a Restoration Project as apposed to a racing bike that's a different story but I don't do that type of thing except for myself these days.

Unfortunately, no.

You're better off getting a case for your dvd writer that "transforms" it into an external one, but I'm unsure wether or not hey sell those without the dvd writers themselves.
