can i use an ide connector of a 3.5" hdd enclosure on an internal dvd writer?

By little_bad_boy ·
i need the cheapest dvd writer setup i can come up with for my laptop even if it is crude using the sources i have now. i have found a good deal for an internal LG dvd writer here. i also have a 3.5" hdd enclosure.

can i use the USB to IDE connector of my 3.5" hdd enclosure on any internal dvd writer drive so i can connect it to my laptop?

my reason why i opt for a crude setup instead of getting an external dvd writer is because i will use the internal dvd writer later on when i build up a desktop.

thanks in advance for your help!

Does this HDD enclosure have an external power source?

You'll need an external power source for the enclosure, but the IDE connection should work the same as it does if the drive was connected internally.

Also, I'm not sure how you would jumper the drive (master/slave). But, I think it would go jumperless just like a HDD would be if it were in the enclosure. I may be wrong.

And, one last consideration. Will the drive physically fit into the enclosure? They usually fit into a 5 1/4" bay.

My question is also how l_b_b plans to power the drive. The data connection should be fine, but I'm not sure how you plan to get juice to it.

You may have to pick up an empty USB external drive bay, then temporarily mount the DVD burner in it. If you don't already have the internal burner, purchasing the burner and USB bay may wind up costing as much as just buying an external burner to begin with.

Yes the HDD enclosure has its own external power source

Obviously, it won't fit into my 3.5" hdd enclosure. So, most likely I see the setup to be sitting somewhere with all its IDE to USB connection gutts out. I wouldn't mind as long as it would be working because as I mentioned, it would be a temporary setup.

Do you think it would work? If there are any doubts, where can I get a cheap deal on 5.5" enclosures?

Thank you for your reply!
