Can I use the router for DHCP with RIS?

By rjlit ·
I'm using W2k Server w/AD. When using DHCP on the server RIS worked fine. I installed a Netgear FVS318 Firewall/router and set it to provide DHCP and turned off DHCP on the server. Now when I try to use RIS, I get a message at the client computer that the DHCP server cannot be found. How can I make this work?
If I have to use the server for DHCP, how do I use the firewall? It's my understanding that the firewall provides it's protection principally by use of NAT which implies DHCP.

Your router is probably not PXE compliant which is what your NICs need to use to get an address when an OS/drivers are not present. When the NICs ask for an address before an OS loads, which is what happens with RIS, it uses PXE to communicate. It works with your server because your servers NIC speaks PXE.

Everything should work just fine with the server as the DHCP server. NAT doesn't require DHCP at all. You could use static addresses if you wanted to. Your router will be smart enough to figure out what to do.

RIS requires TFTP to work correctly and according to my understanding of how RIS works with active directory, only a DHCP server that is authorized by AD can be used for RIS(which leaves you little choice on DHCP servers).

Speaking of NAT,all you need to do is point your clients to use the router as the gateway with NAT turned on.It should translate the addresses out through the firewall.
