Can Machine Learning Help in Understanding Pet Behavior?

For centuries, humans have relied on observation, experience, and intuition to interpret pet behavior. Pet owners, veterinarians, and animal behaviorists use cues like posture, vocalizations, and movement patterns to assess an animal’s emotions, needs, and overall well-being. However, human interpretation can sometimes be inconsistent, subjective, or influenced by personal biases. This raises an important question: Can machine learning (ML) provide a more systematic and accurate way of understanding pet behavior?

Yes. The article on page 16 of the March 2025 issue of Scientific American shows that AI can be used to determine pain in goats, and mentions that comparable applications exist for cats.
