    Hi,
First time using this forum, I have a question.
My desktop is HP ProDesk 400 G5 MT, has 8th generation i5 Pentium
I have added a Graphics card NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 TI, I use HDMI cable to connect the desktop to the TV.
I have a lot of movies stored on this computer and I want to play them on a 4k TV
I have bought a 4k LG Tv, but it’s not working well at all, picture is washed out and the HDR is not working, and the colours are very faint.
Before I was using a 1080p TV and it was working very well.
I think this graphics card can’t handle HDR, is this correct?
If I buy a better graphics card, will I be able to watch 4K content on this TV?
Can this computer handle a better graphics card.
    Thank you for your help.

I have an HP Omen computer (i7 processor) with the same graphics card. I have a 4K TCL 55″ TV that I can watch videos via HDMA cable or wirelessly without any difficulty and a great image. The graphics card is clearly capable of doing the job. Some folks may differ but my/their opinion may be subjective and differ for many reasons. Just my $.02 worth.

So many others have written that it works fine for movie/video playback @4K.

For the GPU I find: maximum HDMI resolution: 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz. So the GPU shouldn’t be a problem. Maybe the cable, maybe settings, maybe the card (a card is more than a GPU).

      Hi,
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate your help.
I am trying to learn as much as I can on the subject, I bought a 4k TV LG 43UQ91006LA recently and when I tried it I was very disappointed with the picture, colours were washed out and the HDR function practically was not working.
The same movies and TV series that I have stored on my external hard drive look better on my old Samsung 1080p than they look on the new 4K TV.
According to Which? This TV has a flawless HK and 4K detail, this wasn’t the case at all.
My first reaction was something wrong with either my computer or graphics card, I use HDMI 2.
I saw an article on PC Gamer dated 18 February 2022 that says that for HDR I need HDMI 2.0a or later, my graphics card only has HDMI 2.0
Yes, you can use any TV with HDMI inputs in place of a computer display. If you’re looking at 4K TVs, you’ll want a graphics card that has at least an HDMI 2.0 port (HDMI 2.0a or later for HDR10 displays). That allows for 4K at 60Hz, with 24-bit colour.
If I was to use my TV for streaming 4K movies and TV series instead of using it as a computer monitor would I get a proper 4k picture, high definition?
      Many thanks,
      Euluta

Whether or not your graphics card can handle a 4K TV depends on the specifications of the card itself. To support 4K resolution, your graphics card should have a sufficient amount of video memory (VRAM) and processing power. It is important to check the manufacturer’s specifications of your graphics card to determine its capabilities and ensure compatibility with a 4K TV. Additionally, factors such as the interface (HDMI, DisplayPort) and the version of the interface on your graphics card can also impact its ability to handle 4K resolution.

4K HDR Playback Issue with Current Graphics Card

      by mattfrancis40 ·

In reply to Can my graphics card handle 4k TV ?

      Welcome to the forum, Euluta!

It seems your current graphics card, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, may not handle 4K HDR content well. To enjoy 4K HDR movies on your new LG TV, you might consider upgrading to a more powerful graphics card that explicitly supports 4K HDR, such as an NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon RX series card. Before upgrading, check if your HP ProDesk 400 G5 MT can accommodate the new card in terms of space and power supply. Also, make sure your TV settings and HDMI cable are optimized for 4K HDR, and ensure your content source is in 4K resolution. Good luck with your setup!
