I have a computer that when you try to access the floppy drive using explorer, it locks up and declares an explorer.exe error. The system is running Windows 2000 Professional. It was running SP2 and IE6. I upgraded it to SP3 and all other updates from the Windows update site. I replaced the floppy with a known good one. The floppy is accessible from a Command prompt and within applications, ie word and excel. Only Explorer exhibits this problem. I think this safely excludes the possibility of the floppy controller being bad. It is also running Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition.

This is not hardware as explorer is the only program to have a problem. I tried all hardware solutions first. I have since posting this question tried a repair of Win2k and uninstalling the Yamaha Synthisizer program that Microsoft has documented ascausing a problem with WinXP
I have seen on PCs where Windows 2000 and the BIOS are incompatible. Check with the PC manufacturer for this problem, and see if there are any BIOS upgrades.
Hi, I had the same problem with a WinNT box. The problem was drivers (I think the NIC driver). I can't correct this problem without a fresh install of the OS. I used the same drivers after reinstall but all was OK.
