Can not be pinged

By john ·
I have a computer running Win2K on a Win2K server network. This computer is no longer able to be pinged or be connected to remotely and other users are unable to get to the shared resources on this computer. I can ping everyone from this computer and can log onto the network and recieve email as well as browse the network. I dont understand what is happening here. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Can you do an ipconfig/all on this PC and another machine. Are you running any kind of software firewall??

We had a similar problem when installing a wireless router onto our network, do you have any such devices between the server and the machine that would assign the node a different IP than what would be assigned by your DHCP server.

No it was working up until 2 weeks ago everything is as it should be network wise since this is the only PC this is happening to. Did a sfc /scannow and am thinking of doing a repair on the OS or removing then reinstalling TCP/IP. Do you think this might help or am I just wasting time. Thanks.

Hi John

If you can ping out and all other connectivity on the problem machine appears ok, but you cannot ping it from another machine, something is blocking incoming ICMP packet requests on your machine.

As others have pointed out this is normally a firewall issue. Has a software firewall recently been added or reconfigured on this machine?
