I have a 1GHZ pentium III with 384 MB and with windows 98, something happened to this computer that when I started it gave me this error
data error on c:\ abort, retry,fail and that’s it.
I tried scandisk and everytime it stopped at directory structure 1% and it would not do anything, I got a hold of norton utilities and was able to do norton disk doctor, after that I was able to scandisk from the hard drive but it said I had lost some clusters, and then after that it startedasking for vxd’s files and some dll’s which I got from another computer similar to this one, it kept asking for a particular vxd file which is fpms9x.vxd, which I could not find and I have gone to the web and there is nothing there, it does say error loading kernel, reinstall windows, I have tried doing that since, I boot from a floppy and then run setup, but as soon it into the start of windows setup it says I already have an operating system and it would not allow me to continue, I can not even go into safe mode , when I go into safemode it gives me this error while initializing device vbfbackup, could not load vfd.vxd, please run setup again, I have alot of data on this hard drive that I don’t want to lose and somehow I want to make sure I retrieve all that data, I noticed that on my hard drive I have an installation of ghost, I have never used it, but I was just reading about it on the discussion forum, would this be able to help me out to get my files and copying into another hard drive without losing anything nad if so , how do I go about using it, any information on how to do it, or if you have any other suggestions as to what to try to be able to retrieve the data or if somehow I can get windows to come alive again.
