Can not go to BIOS setting?

By sanwardak ·
Hello
One of my customer brought HP compaq 6515b laptop. The problem was that it askinng for power on password at start up. The customer did not put any password. I clear it by removing CMOS battery and this solved the problem. But after 2 or 3 reboot I was trying to go safe mode, by keep pressing F8 suddnly it agian asking me for power on password. I think by pressing for F8 add the pasword I don't know why. Now the next problem I see is the Hard drive is not reconizing, when i power it on it goes to a black screen with HP logo and windows vista product key on the top and F9 boot menu F10 Bios setup and F12 network boot, but none of the option work, I dont know why. I some time the hard drive reconize, then I can go to any of this option. Can some one help me out. It has windows vista home basic.

Thanks

If someone else did not enter a password, this is a problem that should be referred to the vendor.

I don't believe this is even possible.

I think by pressing for F8 add the pasword I don't know why.

F8 is a Windows function, so no.

Hard drive is not reconizing,

In BIOS? Because your following text indicates that the HDD must be in use.

when i power it on it goes to a black screen with HP logo and windows vista product key on the top and F9 boot menu F10 Bios setup and F12 network boot,

Either this has been configured to display at boot, or iit is being shown because there is a problem with booting normally.

but none of the option work

There may be more significant hardware problems, or the BIOS does not have the correct date set, or something. Try pressing the key used to enter BIOS repeatedly as soon as the system is powered on.

You may want to check the connections for the HDD, etc., but there may be a hardware failure with the drive controller or something. If the machine is still under warranty, contact HP or the vendor immediately. You probably want to do this even if it is not under warranty.

Of course, the disk will not be available for boot until the password problem is resolved, so it is hard to know if there is any other issue. Did we maybe put a blank password in, or the customer is just not admitting to forgetting the password? Or maybe the computer does not really belong to the customer? (Which is why this is the extent to which we answer any sort of password questions here.)

No, the problem is that you apparently focused on the last sentence I wrote. It is patently obvious that I read your questions as I quoted and addressed them point by point. I didn't accuse you of anything, I am just making you aware of the rules. OK?

Personally I would be checking the rest of the Hardware

by OH Smeg In reply to Can not go to BIOS settin ...

With something like the Ultimate Boot CD as it sounds as if there is a Hardware Issue.

Though if you did not reset the BIOS after removing the Battery it could just be that the system is hitting an Error of a Incorrect BIOS Setting.

You can download the Ultimate Boot CD free here

http://majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Boot_CD_d4981.html

After you burn the ISO to a CD test the HDD, RAM and Keyboard at the very least and see what if any errors that you get.

As for entering Safe Mode instead of continually pressing the F8 Key I tell my customers to Press & Hold it down till the internal speaker starts going nuts and that will get them to the Screen to select whatever they want. However as said above even continually pressing the F8 Key shouldn't cause the system to do anything else but enter the Windows Selection Screen unless the Keyboard Interpretor on the M'Board is shot. If that's the case here you'll need a new M'Board and I don't think it's worth the repair if that's the case.

The hard drive I think has problem.

by sanwardak In reply to Can not go to BIOS settin ...

Because some time after 8 or 9 power on and off it will go to the bios there i can see the hard drive is not reconized. Once it worked and I installed vista on it, when I reboot it the second time, it took me back to black screen with F9 f10 and f12 option and none work. and the hard drive light go green for a while at sart up and then go off for ever , even not flashing.

Or the controller. Test as above with UBCD, or the built-in BIOS tests HP has. You can try swapping out the drive if you like.

Two problems

by Merlin the Wiz In reply to Can not go to BIOS settin ...

It sounds to me like you have two problems.
1. The pre-boot enhanced controller firmware is corrupted, causing the computer to think it has a password problem. Turn it OFF, remove ALL power (including the CMOS battery) for at least an hour to get everything discharged. Turn it back on and change the BIOS settings to your preferences, including first boot from CD.
2. The MBR on the hard drive is corrupted. That is why it is recognized some boots and not others.
Turn it back on and put a copy of Vista in the CD drive. Go to the Recovery console, run fixboot and fixmbr.
