    Can Not Search Correctly

    Locked

    by borginva ·

I am using XP SP1. I have search set up correctly but it can not find any text or phrases in PDF docs. Whether I have “all files” or “pdf” selected for the search criteria.
    Please advise.

You will very rarely find uncompressed, plain text in any PDF. Take a look at one with a hex browser and you’ll see that the only ‘words’ you can read are control-strings, not the actual text of the document.

rdschaefer is correct, .pdf are conmpressed encoded files to stop people changing them the text does not exist in normal format. Trying to search for content in them is like trying to search for text content within .jpg images, just don’t work.

You can serach within a .pdf file for text once you have opened it in Adobe Acrobat Reader and I have heard of a plug in for Adobe Acrobate full version that will do this by opening the files in a virtual space and scanning them and will only display thsoe with content matches. but this is costly.
