Can se domain but cant access it.

By Crowmoor ·
Have a big networking problem. I have a Win200 Pro SP2 that I use to log on to a Nt4 server SP5. Logon goes fine. But when I open Explorer and goto Network Neighborhood I only see the domain. I cant see the computers in the domain.

I have only TCPIP installed. My account is valid. My computeraccount is valid. Hardware is tested and OK. No programs that could interfere is installed. I can ping and I can connect if I type the whole name and share of the computer.

Basicly its Network Neighborhood that is malfunctioning. NetworkAccess is slow.

I tried all the obvious and also alot of hardcorestuff but no effect. Any ideas?

We have a lot more Win200 that works fine. We reinstalled another that had the same problem and now it works fine. Just dont want to reinstall this one.

Check your wins configuration. Is your w2k client using the same wins server as your other computers and are they all on the same segment. Also try going to network neighborhood and do a search for the computers you are trying to browse. If you can find them wait a few minutes and they should show up in network neighborhood.

Thanx anyhow.

Ok. That is weird! Well, here are my suggestions:
1. Like the comment from S2Rock, make sure WINS is running on a server, and that this Win2K box is using WINS. Eventhough Win2K uses DNS for name resolution, it will use WINS after it tries DNS resolution. The pattern for 2K is for it to use DNS first, then HOSTS file resolution, then WINS, then the LMHOSTS file, and finally broadcast. At least, that is the theory! So, make sure the Win2K machine is a WINS client.
2. I would try taking the extra step and define your PDC and domain in the LMHOSTS file on this Win2K box.
So, go to %windir%\system32\drivers\etc and add the following 2 lines to LMHOSTS file:

10.0.0.1 PDCName #PRE #DOM:Domain-name
10.0.0.1 "Domain-name \0x1b" #PRE

Of course, you will change the IP address to the IP address of your PDC, as well as putting in your PDC machine name, and your domain name in the 2 spots. Try that, then reboot just to make sure.
(If rebooting is not an option, you could run NBTSTAT -R to purge the NBT cache.)

3. Is the Computer Browser service running on your PDC? Make sure it is. Also, let this service run on your Win2K box. Computer Browser is the service that takes care of this display. Check out the Event Viewer logs on the Win2K machine and see if a Browser election is going on or if there are Browser errors.
Worse comes to worse, stop Computer Browser on all of your machines (including the Win2K box and the PDC). Wait a few minutes, then start Computer Browser back up on the PDC FIRST, then the other machines (again, including the Win2K). Wait 15 minutes for the elections to occur. Then check out your Win2K box.

Here is a TechNet article on LMHOSTS setup:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q180/0/94.ASP

Hope this helps.

Thanx a lot but tried it already. Wins is running, Dns is running, I had written into Hosts file. Computerbrowser is running.

I have tried all the obvious and came out with nothing.

Thanx anyhow.

Just a thought, you said you have only TCP/IP installed. Do you also have client for MS networks installed? And since you're only using WINS, make sure you have no DNS server IP addresses bound. Like I said, just a thought,

Using server manager on the NT, explicitly drop the W2K box out of the domain, then log onto the W2K box as an admin and re-join the domain.

Good luck.

Problem was that someone had installed Black Ice Defender ?n uninstalled it again. But there where traces left that prohibited networkcommunication. By reinstalling the software and deactivate all protection and the uninstal it solved the problem. Thanks for all help!
