Can See Negh Net but can't get to web

By eubanksm ·
I am set up with 98SE. I am running DHCP.
I can see all of the computers on the
neighborhood network. I can connect to
a computer and down load. I can ping the
gateway. I can not get out on the web.
Netscape come backs and says that it was
unable to create a network socket.
Any ideas??

Click on start\run and type sfc, then click ok.
In system file checker choose the option to extract and type wsock32.dll, then click start.
Restore from= <CD drive letter>win98 or the location of the .cab files if they are on the HDD.
Save filein= c:\windows
Restart the system in ms-dos mode.
Go to c:\windows\system.
Type 'ren wsock32.dll wsock32.old' and enter.
Type 'cd..' and enter.
This will bring you to c:\windows.
Type 'move wsock32.dll c:\windows\system' and enter.
Type 'exit' and enter.
Now try to connect.

Nope. Still no good. (I had tried to replace the wsock32.dll already,
but I tried it again.)

Any one else

I think the answer relies on what type of an internet connection you have. Are you using proxy or do you have T1,or DSL connections? If it's proxy you might want to make sure the proxy client is installed and that you have permission to reach the internet. Also, try using Internet Explorer versus Netscape. Unfortunately i don't know what type of connection you're using so it limits my offer of naswers.good luck.

We have a gigabit network here. I have moved to computer to another
location, so the cables have been changed. It is a dell, and dell has
determed that it is not hardware.

You can ping the gateway, can you ping a known IP address past the gateway?
If not it sounds like a proxy setting is wacky, of you have some other security or firewall software preventing netscape from accessing the TCP/IP socket layer

Thanks for the help, but the prof. decided that he didn't want the
students to have web access any. He told me to forget it.

why not forget about proxy server and install sygate. this program is a Network address translator. afterwhich you can log onto the web, icq, https, all the works as you're connected to the internet from any other client in your network. if you still want to use a proxy server then you should make sure your port setting on your internet option is pointing to the correct port with the correct server. ie the computer connected to modem then to the internet.

good luck. try sygate instead
