I can think of a few things that can cause this, and the most common

is - the installed game is looking for the CD/DVD you installed from before it will start the game up, but it can't find it where it expects it to be and has a hernia. The most common cause of this problem is you installed from say Drive and the disc is not in Drive - usually this would generate an error message to put the disc in, but, if that drive isn't locatable at all, the system has a major hernia and BSODs. The usual reason is the drive letters have reassigned. If you installed from a removable drive and unplugged the drive, bingo, that's it.

The other common issue is part of the game software has been corrupted and you need to reinstall.

The third most likely is that something installed since the game has taken over an IRQ and won't release it back for the game to use it. Again a reinstall needed.
