Hello –
Thank you for taking the time to help me. I have an older Sony Vaio (almost 4 years), and I have problems with my RAM not operating at full capacity, or anywhere near it. Until today, when I tried to install Dreamweaver, it hasn’t mattered. The problem I have is that the system only reads around 50% of whatever memory I have installed, and I don’t believe it’s a port issue. I’m suspecting it’s a configuration setting in my BIOS, but I really am not technically confident enough to start making changes to my BIOS, or to even know if this assumption makes sense.
My computer received a facelift 4 months ago when I upgraded (replaced) the hard drive, upgraded to XP,SP2, and doubled the RAM. Other than the RAM issue, the computer runs like a champ – no complaints at all. I’m not sure if the memory problem existed before this upgrade, but it does not appear to be a problem with the slots/ports – they both work. I have (2) 512MB sticks in there, and the system is only reading 448 total. When I take one of the sticks out, the system only reads 192. When I put the other stick into the other port, it still reads 192. I took out both new memory sticks and did the same tests with the old memory sticks, and I have the same results – around 50% of whatever amount is installed in either or both ports.
Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas? Let’s assume I am using the correct memory sticks. The only way I am wrong is if the guy at Fry’s was wrong. And I had my old memory sticks with me for him to use as reference. My computer is healthy and virus free.
