As far as I know, unlike a "SuperDrive" you cannot boot from a ZIP drive.

The problem is that the BIOS does cannot read from the ZIP data cartridge.

What I would do, is:

Mount the hard drive from the laptop as a slave drive using an adapter kit in a desktop.
Recover what data you can from the drive.

Mount a new laptop drive as a slave on the desktop system.
Partition and format the drive as a boot volume.
Copy the Windows CD and the recovered data to the drive.
Make sure to copy device drivers and the ZIP software onto the drive.

Install the new drive in the laptop and install Windows directly from the hard drive.

Another option would be to boot from a USB floppy, CD-ROM, or thumb drive if the BIOS supports booting from USB.

A comment for Max:

Unless I am reading the information on the linked page wrong, what the author is talking about is a MS-DOS boot disk that loads drivers for a ZIP drive.
With additional instructions for copying the necessary install files for Windows 95 from a CD onto a ZIP disk.

Or am I missing something?

I find it rather interesting that most of what is out there on booting from a ZIP drive is for MAC's and Linux.

How to make a zip drive boot disk, by ZEB:

It looks like a lot of trouble, but it may be worth it. TheChas, however, had some great alternative ideas.
