By ldavid ·
My PDC in NT 4.0 and I am trying to add win2000 as a second BDC. Will win2000 run as a BDC to NT?

NO

Windows 2000 has the ability to emulate a PDC (Run in "mixed" mode) but it can't act as a BDC.

The MS Migration path from NT 4.0 to 2000 is for you to upgrade your PDC first. Your BDC's won't even know they are talking to a 2000 server. Then you can upgrade your BDC's one at a time, and then finally your clients (if desired.)

Once all of your BDC's are upgraded, switch each of your domain controllers to "native mode". You should do a little research at MS KB before you do since this is a "one time only" switch. You'll want to make sure you understand exactly what this means.

You won't want to run in "mixed" mode forever, although you could. Doing so will prevent additional Active Directory functionality from being enabled, such as Enterprise Admins.

Hope it helps.
