Can windows 98se and Xp network together

    Locked

    by jkconcrete ·

I am trying to hook a desktop with win 98se to a laptop with xp together via a crossover cable. I have done the setup thru networking wizard in xp but neither computer can see the other. Im wondering if this can be done before and if there are any special procedures required.

Ensure that the 2 systems are in the same work group. If so, use the find computer option to search for the machines.

If this doesnt help you may enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both the systems and also try to install NetBeui protocol on both the systems.

      This should help.

One item to mention also, adding to Kozmo’s comment. To do a quick link to the other computer:
A: know the computer names you assigned to each

B: Go to the Run Dialog Box from the start menu (ie.. Start> Run> )at the Open prompt type the following:

      \\computername

This should automatically pop open a new Dialog box with the other computers shared resources displayed. (Printers/Folders/Drives) If it just gives you a blank window, then you need to enable sharing of each of these on both drives.

This command line tactic also works through Switches and Routers.

Dont forget, you can also Right Click “My Network” icon and choose “Search for Computers” using the other machines name to locate it.

I would suggest looking at the ip address on both computers. They should look something like the following:###.###.###.###

      The address should be similiar.
      For example:
If the ip address is 10.1.1.1 on one computer, the other should be something like 10.1.1.2. If you need help setting the IP address, e-mail me at brandonjones1998@yahoo.com
