Can XP Pro be installed with NT Server?

By kmrcom ·
Have a PII IBM Netfinity 3000 server with 2 mirrored hds - the mirror is broken. The machine is no longer our "server" - has been replaced with a SBS2000 server on a Dell 2300. Want to turn the netfinity into a workstation that will join the SBS2000 domain by hopefully loading XP Pro on one of the hard drives, while keeping the data from the old NT server on the other. Is this possible? Have tried to put on NT 4.0 workstation on one of the drives after the mirror was broken. Couldn't findthe Pro Server adapter driver. The whole thing is a mess now. Won't recognize the admin password, so an operating system needs to be reinstalled to get it to work. Reinstall NT Server? Install XP Pro on the drive which had NT Workstation on it?Throw it away? Clearly we are over our head. Any help would be appreciated.

At the age and speed of the machine, I would try NT again, or Windows 2000.

Unless you can increase the RAM to over 256MB, I wouldn't even try XP.

If all you need to do, is get the data off of the drive, you should be able to mount it in any working NT or W2K workstation and extract the data.
Then, return the drive to the PII, format it, and start over with NT Workstation.

We have all the data off the second hard drive that we need. Can we reformat the first hard drive now and install NT Workstation? The second drive still has NT Server on it and I think that is the problem. Maybe we should reformat both? There isa RAID controller in the mix I think although I am not that familiar with this machine yet (I expect to be very familiar with it soon!)

If you do have all the data, I think I would go ahead, and reformat both drives.

If you do not need, or want RAID on the system, you might want to remove and save the RAID controller as a spare.

If the drives are SCSI, you may be able to use the RAID controller as a standard SCSI controller.

Will try it - at this point there's not a lot to lose - I could turn it into a planter! Thanks.
