Can XP really play AVI media files?

By windinthew ·
I cannot play even small avi files on any media player in XP , even an AVI I made myself with DIVX codec so I know I have the codecs in place. These avi's all play perfectly on Win 98. But in XP I can play AVIs only with the MCI interface of Windows Media Player plug in an image viewer. The normal interface of this plug in refuses to play them as does the latest full WMP "optimised for XP". Since AVI is supposedly a Windows file type this is really puzzling. Is there an answer?
I believe there is some place in the Registry to look for possible codec or driver problems?

complete uninstall WMP (any version), then uninstall ALL codecs, you may need to dig in to do so...

start with installing DIVX 3.11 alpha
then AC3 from the Frainhoffer institute and after this install microdvd player and try again if everything OK step by step upgrade the codecs, but don't mix codecs packs use one only one of the packs available
