Is the LCD itself bad? or has the backlight failed?

The backlight would be less costly to fix.

To assure compatability, your only real source for a new LCD would be IBM. You will likely need to go through an "authorized" repair depot.

Another option, would be to search e-bay for someone selling the same model for parts.

As a side to the above (and another reason to take it in to an authorized IBM repair shop), sometimes a laptop will exhibit display problems that are cause by other problems (mainly system board problems) and just show up as a corrupted display. Unless, of course, you are talking about physical damage to the display.

Also know that the cost of having a new LCD put into the laptop, is usually like 50 - 85% of the cost of replacing the entire laptop.

Inless you can find a model to canablise for spares, and a good technician how can do the work (laptops are not as easy to work on as PC's), it is likly to be prohitabivley expensive espacially on a older machine.

Generally one some thing starts to go wrong you at the top of a slippery slope of on going repairs.

The answer is that you can do all this quite easily.... download the technical mauals from the IBM web site and this will give you clues about which bits to remove. Make notes and lay out parts on an anti static surface. The parts sometimes come up on EBay or Yahoo auctions at very reasonable prices. If you do a search and there is nothing you can save the search & get an email when an item that matches appears. IF YOU AREN'T CONFIDENT take it to IBM repair shop.
