Cannot access the internet.

By ygrubner ·
I am attempting to install a a wireless network.
When I am logged in as an asministrator I am able to connect to the internet through my wireless connection. However, when trying to connect to the internet as a user, the user is unable to connect to the internet and the access point icon is not displayed on the taskbar. Instead a network icon appears with an "X" indicating that there is no network connection. How can this situation be rectified?

Sounds like a permissions issue!

If the admin can but the user can't, does the user need rights to some specific files for the wireless connection?

This response provided me with zero help. I am new at this.
I would appreciate some concrete suggestions.
"If the admin can but the user can't, does the user need rights to some specific files for the wireless connection?". Very unsatisfying response.

Place the user account that is having issues into the local administrators group on that PC.

Log on to the computer as the local administrator.

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrator Tools, and then click User Manager.

In the Groups list, double-click the Administrators.

In the Members list, press and hold down the CTRL key, click the user accounts you want to remove, and then click Remove.

Click OK.

In the Groups list, double-click Users.

Click Add, press and hold down the CTRL key, click the user accounts you want to add, and then click Add.
Click OK.

Click Exit on the User menu to quit User Manager.

The user most likely does not have permissions to access and configure the network settings.

Modification to the original question.

The user should be able to connect through the wireless to the internet and not be able to change any of the current settings nor have administrative rights.Sorry that I was not more specific.

Go to the default domain policy via active directotry users and computers. Note that there is a policy under computer configuration - windows settings - security settings - wireless network policy.

You will need to set up access to the user through this snap-in.

Be careful not to allow anonymous access and remember that wireless is a lot of work for big organisations. Changing secret words contstantly, etc

first I am wondering if when you made the connection if you selected the option that the connection should be available to all users.

Some programs need the following workaround.
give the user temporary admin rights so heshe can create the connections and some registry permissions will be set to the users account.
remove the admin rights and then connect as the user.

Last option is to check on the manufacturers website to see how they suggest to solve the probem (you won't be the first one experiencing this)

Leopold, thanks for your reply. Could you please give me step by step help so that I could accomplish the workaround that you suggested.

"Some programs need the following workaround.

remove the admin rights and then connect as the user."

Exactly how do I do this.
Thanks again,
Jerry
