cannot access to a shared drive/files

By hannah ·
I have a NT workstation 4.0 with SP6 with 2 drives on it, 1 fat and 1 ntfs. This machine is on the network because I can ping to it.
I shared both drives and grant everybody, all domain users with full access right. I can see this machine from the network neighborhood though it takes a long to browse it. However, I wasn't be able, and nobody either, can access to that shared dirves. This is the message tha I got "\\yourcomputer\sharedfolder is not accessible. The session was cancelled". So, what could cause it and what else can I look for it. Please help.

check to see if you drives are shared with a "$"... if they are, you wouldn't be able to see them...

NO. I know that, it is for Admin. I named it something else. But still cannot access both way. Nobody can access even administrator or who has administrator right.

Is the NT Workstation and the other PCs in the same domain or workgroup? Also, they should have a common networking protocol installed. Try installing NetBEUI on the NT box and the other PCs, as long as there is not a router between the two of them. If there is a router, then check the subnet masks on the PCs, and look at your routing tables.

Try \\ipaddress\sharename.

If this works, then you have a name resolution problem. Check your WINS settings.

Since you have NetBEUI running on the machines, maybe IP is set as the default protocol. Are there any Windows NT servers on your network? If so, are any of them running WINS server? If so, maybe the WINS database is corrupt, causing a name resolution problem. If you don't have an NT server on your network, use lmhosts files on your computers to provide name resolution to IP addresses. If you have an NT server(s), but none are running WINS, either use lmhosts file to provide name resolution, or set up WINS on one of your NT servers - but preferably not the PDC.

Good luck.

Is the Server service running on the workstation, and bound to the NIC and protocol used?
